In 1738 John Rocque, an obscure French surveyor, was selected to undertake a fresh survey of London, the first for 56 years. It took him nine years to complete and was magnificently drawn by the King’s engraver, measuring six & a half by thirteen feet. The map became the standard map of the period.

In this A-Z edition the 24 sheets (on a scale of 14 inches per mile) have been supplemented by the 1747 index. An invaluable tool for historians, geographers, genealogists and map lovers.

The indexes allow users to identify the position of streets and buildings, in some cases right down to small courts and alleys.

This new book with introductory notes by Ralph Hyde. Published 1982 by the London Topographical Society and by Harry Margary in association with the Guildhall Library.
